Today's tithi is Pratipada, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Chitra nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Ravivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vaidhriti yoga and Kimstughna karana.

Pratipada in Shukla paksha

Shukla Pratipada is the first tithi of the bright fortnight, the twelve degrees of sky the Moon covers just after it leaves the Sun, so it is the day the light officially starts coming back.

Amavasya ends when the Moon and the Sun stand together, and Pratipada begins the moment the Moon pulls a single degree ahead. By sunset the Moon is still so close to the Sun that most people will see nothing at all, or at best a hairline low in the west that sets within minutes of the Sun. The tithi is announcing a phase you cannot yet observe.

In amanta reckoning this is the first day of a new lunar month, so several new year observances land on a Shukla Pratipada, most famously the one that opens Chaitra. In the classical grouping of tithis it belongs to Nanda, the first, sixth and eleventh, and the traditional deity is Agni, the fire that has to be lit before anything else happens.

Its plain use is as a start line. The half tithi that opens it carries Kimstughna, the once a month fixed karana of clean beginnings, so the tradition has stacked two different reasons to treat this as the top of a cycle. Whether you want a monthly reset is your own decision, and this is where the calendar offers you one.
