Today's tithi is Amavasya, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Hasta nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Shanivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Indra yoga and Chatushpada karana.

What is Chatushpada karana?

Chatushpada is a fixed karana that occurs once a lunar month, occupying the first half of Amavasya, and its name means four footed, which is why the tradition links it with animals and with the rites for ancestors.

It is the second of the four fixed karanas, arriving after Shakuni and just as the Moon closes the last of its distance from the Sun. Amavasya itself is the tithi kept for the pitrs, the ancestors, and Chatushpada holds its opening half, so the two associations sit together in practice.

The four footed name points at cattle in the oldest layer of the tradition, and by extension at animals kept and cared for, at wealth that walks around, and at anything alive that depends on you. In an agricultural calendar that was one of the most serious categories there was.

For a modern reader the useful part is the once a month rhythm rather than the specific subject. A dark Moon half day that tradition reserved for looking after dependants and remembering the dead is a workable prompt for whatever your version of that is, and no observance is required to notice it.
