Today's tithi is Dwitiya, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Swati nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Somavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vishkambha yoga and Balava karana.

What is Vishkambha yoga?

Vishkambha is the first of the 27 nithya yogas, the panchang limb found by adding the Sun's and the Moon's sidereal longitudes and cutting the total into 27 parts of 13°20', and its name means a supporting beam.

This kind of yoga is worth separating from two others that share the word. It is not the physical practice, and it is not a chart combination like the named yogas of a birth chart. It is a daily measurement, one of the five limbs, and since the combined longitudes advance about fourteen degrees a day each yoga lasts roughly twenty two to twenty four hours.

A vishkambha is the prop that holds a structure apart so it does not collapse inward: a strut, a crossbar, a supporting beam. The classical scheme counts it among the nine yogas that ask for care, and the reason follows from the image. A prop is under load. It is doing something necessary and it is doing it under strain.

The frame that survives honestly is exactly that. Work begun here is described as needing more support than usual, which is a cost rather than a warning, and often a cost worth paying because the thing being held up matters. Whether you want to carry that load today is a decision, not a forecast.
