Today's tithi is Navami, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Dhanishta nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Shukravara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Shukla yoga and Gara karana.

What is Shukla yoga?

Shukla is the twenty fourth of the 27 nithya yogas, and its name means white or bright, the same word that names the bright fortnight of the lunar month.

The shared word is a common source of confusion and worth untangling. Shukla paksha is the half of the month in which the Moon is filling, and it is decided by the distance between the Moon and the Sun. Shukla yoga is one of twenty seven segments of the two longitudes added together. They are different limbs and they do not have to occur together.

As a yoga the classical associations are with clarity: things stated plainly, transparent arrangements, and work whose merits are visible without explanation. Whiteness in the tradition's vocabulary is usually about being able to see what is there.

A workable use is choosing to be explicit. Assumptions left unsaid are the most reliable source of trouble in any joint undertaking, and this is a reasonable day to say the thing out loud.
