Today's tithi is Ashtami, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Shravana nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Guruvara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Shubha yoga and Kaulava karana.
Krishna Ashtami is the eighth tithi of the dark fortnight, from 264 to 276 degrees of separation, and it contains the last quarter, the half lit Moon that is still emptying.
Two hundred and seventy degrees is three quarters of the way round the circle, so somewhere inside this tithi the Moon is exactly half illuminated again. It rises around midnight and is high overhead at sunrise, which makes it the phase most often seen in a morning sky by people who are not looking for it.
Ashtami is a Jaya tithi with the third and the thirteenth, and the traditional deity is Rudra. The monthly Kalashtami observance falls on it. In purnimanta reckoning the birth of Krishna is kept on the Krishna Ashtami of Bhadrapada, which is one of the most widely observed nights of the year.
Half light on the way down is the tradition's picture of a turning point that has already been passed. If Shukla Ashtami asks whether you still want the thing, this one asks what you have actually learned from it, and the answer belongs to you rather than to the sky.
