Today's tithi is Shashthi, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Jyeshtha nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Ravivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vyatipata yoga and Vanija karana.

Shashthi in Krishna paksha

Krishna Shashthi is the sixth tithi of the dark fortnight, the stretch from 240 to 252 degrees of separation, a Nanda tithi whose traditional deity is Kartikeya.

The Moon rises around four hours after the Sun sets, and the missing portion is now a third of the disc or more. The last quarter is two tithis away. The fortnight has passed its halfway point in time even though the visible Moon still looks substantial.

Nanda groups the first, sixth and eleventh, and the classical associations of this tithi are with directed effort, the same as in the bright half. Set in a waning fortnight, that energy is described as applied to something already under way rather than to something being opened.

As a reading it points at the middle of a job, which is the least glamorous part and the one where most things quietly stop. The tradition marking it at all is a small argument for finishing what you took on.
