Today's tithi is Pratipada, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Hasta nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Mangalavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vriddhi yoga and Kaulava karana.

Hasta nakshatra

Hasta is the thirteenth nakshatra, from 10°00' to 23°20' of Kanya (Virgo), ruled by the Moon, and its name simply means the hand.

The stars are the neat quadrilateral of Corvus, a compact and surprisingly bright little figure south of Virgo that looks nothing like a crow and quite a lot like a hand held out. It is one of the more satisfying nakshatras to find because the shape is so definite.

The deity is Savitr, the Sun in its aspect as maker and impeller, and the classical activity class is Kshipra, swift. The gana is Deva (divine). Everything in the nakshatra is about skill in the hands: craft, dexterity, sleight, the ability to get hold of a thing and to hold it.

The tradition uses it for work where the doing and the knowing are the same act. Learning an instrument, fixing something, writing by hand, anything where you cannot separate the technique from the result. It is a reasonable nakshatra for practising rather than planning.
