Today's tithi is Tritiya, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Revati nakshatra, pada 4. The vara is Guruvara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Brahma yoga and Gara karana.

What is a panchang?

A panchang is the traditional Indian almanac for a single day, built from five measurements of where the Sun and the Moon actually are: the tithi, the vara, the nakshatra, the yoga and the karana.

The word means five limbs, from pancha (five) and anga (limb). Every limb is a different way of asking one question: where is the Moon in relation to the Sun, and where is it against the fixed stars. Nothing in it is decorative. Each limb is a number anyone can derive from two positions, which is why panchangs made in different regions agree about the sky even where they disagree about which festival lands on which date.

Three of the five come from the same raw material, the angle between the Moon and the Sun. The tithi cuts that angle into steps of 12 degrees and the karana into half steps of 6. The yoga adds the two longitudes together instead of subtracting them. The nakshatra ignores the Sun completely and asks only which of the 27 star segments the Moon is sitting in. The vara is the weekday and the graha that rules it.

Reading one is a habit more than a skill. Once Shukla Ashtami means a half lit Moon that is still filling, and Swati means the Moon is out near Arcturus, a date stops being a blank square on a grid and starts having a shape you can check with your own eyes.
