Mrigashira nakshatra
Mrigashira is the fifth nakshatra, from 23°20' of Vrishabha (Taurus) to 6°40' of Mithuna (Gemini), ruled by Mars, and its name means the head of a deer.
The stars are the faint triangle that forms the head of Orion, just above the famous belt, which makes this one of the easier nakshatras to locate on a winter night. The deer's head is the symbol and the deity is Soma, the Moon itself in an older form.
A deer's head is a searching image: ears up, nose testing the air, moving before it is sure. The classical activity class is Mridu, soft, and the gana is Deva (divine). What the tradition builds from that is curiosity rather than pursuit, the stage of looking for something before you know exactly what it is.
Its practical shape is the search phase of anything. Reading around a subject, asking people, trying versions. That phase has a real cost, which is that it does not look like progress from outside, and choosing to spend time in it anyway is a decision worth making on purpose.
