Today's tithi is Ekadashi, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Rohini nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Mangalavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Brahma yoga and Vishti karana.

Ekadashi in Shukla paksha

Shukla Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight, the stretch from 120 to 132 degrees of separation, and it is the most widely observed tithi in the Hindu calendar, kept as a fast in Vaishnava practice.

Ekadashi comes twice a lunar month, once in each paksha, which gives twenty four in an ordinary year and twenty six when a month repeats. Each has its own name and its own regional customs. Two in the bright fortnight anchor the year for many communities: the one in Ashadha that opens the four monsoon months, and the one in Kartika that closes them.

The tithi belongs to the Nanda group with the first and the sixth, and the traditional deities are the Vishvedevas. The fast is not the whole of the observance. Classically it covers what you eat, what you say, and how the day is spent, and it is broken at a specific window on the following tithi rather than whenever convenient.

The Moon by now is a wide gibbous, rising late in the afternoon and up nearly all night. Whether you keep the fast or not, the tithi is the tradition's regular built in pause, arriving twice a month whether or not you feel like pausing, which is arguably the point of it.
