Krishna Navami is the ninth tithi of the dark fortnight, spanning 276 to 288 degrees of Moon to Sun separation, a Rikta tithi whose traditional deity is Durga.

The Moon is now a waning crescent, rising after midnight and hanging in the eastern sky at dawn with its horns turned away from the Sun. From here the light drops away quickly, and the last third of the fortnight passes with the Moon barely present in most people's day.

Rikta means empty, and the fourth, ninth and fourteenth carry that grouping in the classical scheme. The handbooks keep those tithis for clearing, discharging and putting down rather than for beginnings, which is a description of what fits rather than a judgement on the day.

The value of a named empty day is that it makes room legitimate. Most schedules have no slot for undoing things, and a tradition that provides one every ten days is offering a genuinely useful piece of structure. Using it is a decision, not an obligation.
