Today's tithi is Ashtami, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Shatabhisha nakshatra, pada 4. The vara is Shanivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vishkambha yoga and Kaulava karana.

Shanivara, the day of Saturn

Shanivara is the vara ruled by Shani, the slowest of the visible grahas, and the tradition connects it with patience, service, maintenance and work whose reward arrives late.

Saturn takes about twenty nine and a half years to circle the zodiac, so the same stretch of sky is revisited roughly once a generation. The day carries that timescale. The classical associations are labour, structures, repair, the elderly, iron and oil, and duties to people who cannot repay you. Observances for Shani and for Hanuman are both common on it.

Shani has an unfair reputation, and the tradition itself is more careful than the reputation suggests. What it describes is cost and delay rather than harm: things take the time they take, shortcuts get found out, and effort put into foundations shows up much later than effort put into surfaces. That is a description of how slow work behaves, not a prediction about a person.

So the honest use is planning. If a task will pay off over years rather than weeks, this is the traditional slot for starting it, and the classical scheme pairs the vara with the Rikta tithis, the fourth, ninth and fourteenth, which are themselves kept for clearing rather than launching. Whether you want to spend a Saturday that way is entirely your call.
