Today's tithi is Panchami, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Uttara Ashadha nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Mangalavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Shukla yoga and Kaulava karana.

Mangalavara, the day of Mars

Mangalavara is the vara ruled by Mangala, the graha the tradition connects with effort, courage and anything that has to be pushed rather than persuaded.

Mangala also goes by Kuja and Angaraka, and the day is widely kept for Hanuman in northern and western India. The classical associations are physical and direct: land and property, tools, discipline, competition, and work that costs something to begin. Where the Sun's day is about standing in your own name, this one is about spending energy.

That energy is described as a cost, not as a temperament handed to you. A day associated with push is a day when pushing is the obvious move, and the tradition is honest that the obvious move is not always the right one. The same vara has long been treated as a poor fit for anything that needs patience or delicacy, for the same reason a hammer is a poor fit for a screw.

It is a useful day to schedule the task you have been avoiding, if avoiding it is what has been costing you. That is a decision about your own week rather than a reading of the sky, and the vara offers the frame, not the verdict.
