Magha nakshatra
Magha is the tenth nakshatra, the first 13°20' of Simha (Leo), ruled by Ketu, and the tradition gives it to the pitrs, the ancestors.
Its marker is Regulus, the bright white star at the base of the sickle shape that forms the Lion's head, and one of the easiest stars in the whole nakshatra list to identify. The name means the mighty or the bountiful, and the symbol is a throne.
A throne is a seat somebody else occupied first, which is exactly what the ancestor connection is about. Magha is the tradition's nakshatra of inheritance in the broadest sense: name, position, obligation, the things handed down whether or not they were asked for. The gana is Rakshasa, an intense temperament rather than a wicked one, and the classical activity class is Ugra, fierce.
It is also the far side of a gandanta, one of the three junctions in the zodiac where a water sign meets a fire sign, since it begins immediately after Ashlesha ends. The reading that carries is about what you do with what you were given, which is a decision rather than a fate.
