Today's tithi is Saptami, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Ardra nakshatra, pada 3. The vara is Mangalavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Atiganda yoga and Gara karana.

Saptami in Shukla paksha

Shukla Saptami is the seventh tithi of the bright fortnight, from 72 to 84 degrees of Moon to Sun separation, and the tradition assigns it to Surya, the Sun.

The Moon is now within a few degrees of its first quarter, so it looks close to half lit and it sets around midnight. This is the point in the fortnight where the phase stops being a crescent by any description and starts being a solid shape.

Saptami belongs to the Bhadra group, with the second and the twelfth, and its solar deity gives it associations with health, movement, visibility and journeys. Ratha Saptami, in the bright fortnight of Magha, marks the Sun's chariot turning north and is the best known observance on this tithi.

It is a day the classical scheme treats kindly for travel and for anything that has to be done in the open rather than quietly. Read that as a description of what fits the day's shape rather than as a promise about the journey.
