Today's tithi is Ekadashi, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Purva Ashadha nakshatra, pada 2. The vara is Budhavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vyatipata yoga and Bava karana.

What is Vyatipata yoga?

Vyatipata is the seventeenth of the 27 nithya yogas, its name meaning a great falling or a reversal, and the classical scheme treats it as the one that asks for the most care of all twenty seven.

The word describes something going over: a fall, a turning upside down, a course that reverses. It is also used in Indian astronomy for a specific alignment involving the declinations of the Sun and Moon, which is part of why the term carries weight in the literature.

The traditional handling is narrow and specific. It is kept away from beginnings and from celebrations, and what remains is a great deal: reflection, rites for the ancestors, charity, rest, and the deliberate decision not to force anything for one day. Roughly once a lunar month is often enough that nothing about it can be rare or dramatic.

The honest frame is that some days are better spent not pushing. That is a use of a day rather than a loss of one, and treating a pause as a choice you made is the whole difference between rest and frustration.
