Chaturthi in Krishna paksha

Krishna Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of the dark fortnight, spanning 216 to 228 degrees of separation, and it carries the monthly Ganesha observance kept after moonrise.

This is the Sankashti observance, held in the waning half of every month, and its distinguishing feature is that it ends when the Moon appears rather than at a clock time. Since Krishna Chaturthi moonrise falls around two hours after sunset, the fast runs through the evening rather than the day, which is unusual among tithi observances.

In the classical grouping this is a Rikta tithi with the ninth and the fourteenth. Rikta means empty, and the handbooks keep those tithis for clearing rather than for launching. Pairing an empty tithi with the deity asked before beginnings is the same logic that runs through the bright fortnight Chaturthi: you make room first.

In the bright fortnight of Kartika a well known observance for the wellbeing of a spouse also falls on a Krishna Chaturthi, waiting for the same moonrise. The reading that carries over is patience with a fixed end point, which is a specific and quite bearable kind of difficulty.
