Today's tithi is Pratipada, in the Krishna paksha, the waning half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Magha nakshatra, pada 3. The vara is Ravivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Atiganda yoga and Balava karana.

Krishna Pratipada is the first tithi of the dark fortnight, the twelve degrees just past opposition, so it is the day after the full Moon and the beginning of the emptying half.

The Moon still looks full to most people, but it now rises about three quarters of an hour after sunset instead of with it, and that delay is the first sign of the turn. Every night from here the Moon comes up later and thinner until it disappears at Amavasya.

In purnimanta reckoning, standard across much of northern India, this is the first day of a new lunar month. In amanta reckoning it is the sixteenth day of the current one. The tithi and the paksha are identical either way; only the month name differs, which is a good reminder that calendars disagree about labels far more often than about the sky.

The classical grouping puts Pratipada with the Nanda tithis, and the traditional deity is Agni. Read in the dark fortnight, the emphasis shifts from lighting a fire to tending one: the beginning here is the beginning of a decline, and the tradition treats managing that well as its own kind of skill.
