Today's tithi is Dashami, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Revati nakshatra, pada 3. The vara is Shanivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Variyana yoga and Taitila karana.
Shukla Dashami is the tenth tithi of the bright fortnight, spanning 108 to 120 degrees of Moon to Sun separation, and it belongs to the Purna group of tithis the tradition treats as complete.
The Moon is a broad gibbous now, rising in the afternoon and setting in the small hours, bright enough to wash out the fainter stars near it. Two thirds of the bright fortnight is gone and Purnima is five tithis away.
The traditional deity is Yama in his aspect as dharma, the keeper of what is owed and what is right, and the classical associations are with completion, with duties discharged and with formal conclusions. Vijayadashami, the day after the nine nights in Ashwina, is the best known observance on this tithi.
The frame that survives translation is closing well. Finishing a thing properly is a different job from finishing it, and it costs more. The tradition marks this as the day when that extra cost is worth paying, and leaves the accounting to you.
