Panchami in Shukla paksha
Shukla Panchami is the fifth tithi of the bright fortnight, spanning 48 to 60 degrees between the Moon and the Sun, and it belongs to the Purna group, the tithis the tradition treats as complete in themselves.
The Moon is now a fat crescent moving toward its first quarter, high in the west at dusk and setting three or four hours after the Sun. It is the easiest phase for seeing craters along the terminator if you ever point anything at it, because the low light there throws long shadows.
The traditional deity of the tithi is the nagas, the serpents, and two well known observances sit on a Shukla Panchami: one in Magha associated with learning, art and the first turn toward spring, and one in Shravana kept for the serpents themselves. The Purna grouping, the fifth, tenth and fifteenth, is the one the classical scheme associates with fullness and with things that are already whole.
As a reading it suggests finishing something small rather than opening something large. There is usually one task sitting at ninety percent, and a day described as complete in itself is a reasonable one to spend closing it.
