Chaturdashi in Krishna paksha
Krishna Chaturdashi is the fourteenth tithi of the dark fortnight, from 336 to 348 degrees of separation, the last full tithi before Amavasya and the one that carries the monthly Shivaratri.
Masik Shivaratri falls on this tithi every month, kept through the night rather than through the day, and once a year in the month of Phalguna it becomes Maha Shivaratri, one of the largest observances in the calendar. In Kartika the same tithi carries the day that precedes the main night of the festival of lights.
Chaturdashi is a Rikta tithi with the fourth and the ninth. Emptiness and a night vigil sit together naturally here: the Moon is a hairline crescent at best, rising minutes before the Sun, so the night this tithi covers is as dark as the month gets while a Moon still technically exists.
The second half of this tithi carries Shakuni, one of the four fixed karanas that appear only once a month. That makes this one of the more distinctive pages in a lunar month, and a reasonable place to look at what you want to carry into the next one.
