Today's tithi is Navami, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra, pada 1. The vara is Guruvara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Vyaghata yoga and Kaulava karana.

Reading the five limbs together

The five limbs of a panchang are five separate measurements of one sky rather than five scores to add up, and reading them as a set is what turns a list of names into a description of a day.

They move at different speeds, which is what keeps the combinations fresh. The vara turns over exactly every seven days. The nakshatra advances about one step a day. The yoga advances a little faster than that. The tithi runs somewhere between about nineteen and twenty six hours, so it drifts against the date, and the karana simply halves it. A full five limb pattern almost never repeats in the same arrangement.

Some pairings are structural rather than coincidental. A karana always belongs to a specific half of a specific tithi, so those two are never independent. A nakshatra landing on a particular vara, on the other hand, is a genuine coincidence, and the classical scheme names several of those combinations and keeps them for particular kinds of work.

No limb outranks the rest and no combination is a sentence passed on a day. Traditional practice reads the set as texture: what the day is shaped for, what it would cost to push against that shape, and whether what you want to do is worth the push. The last part of that is a decision, and it stays with the reader.
