Shukla Tritiya is the third tithi of the bright fortnight, the stretch from 24 to 36 degrees of Moon to Sun separation, and it is the first phase most people notice without looking for it.

By now the crescent is definite, hanging in the western sky for a couple of hours after dark, thick enough to show the curve of the terminator clearly. If you want to see earthshine, the faint grey glow filling the unlit part of the disc, this and the next tithi are the best chances in the month.

Tritiya belongs to the Jaya group, the third, eighth and thirteenth, and the traditional deity is Gauri. The classical associations are with things that hold: agreements, arrangements between families, and undertakings meant to last past the season. One Shukla Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha carries the name meaning that which does not diminish, and is widely kept for beginnings and for giving.

Read simply, it is a day for the second step rather than the first. The idea already exists; the question is whether you commit anything real to it. That question belongs to you, and the tradition only marks it as a reasonable time to ask.
