Today's tithi is Saptami, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Mula nakshatra, pada 4. The vara is Shanivara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Atiganda yoga and Gara karana.

What is Gara karana?

Gara is the fifth of the seven movable karanas, a six degree half tithi, and the tradition ties it to the earth and to work that is put into the ground and left to take its time.

The common lists give Gara to Bhumi, the earth itself, and the classical associations are agricultural in the oldest sense: sowing, planting, laying foundations, anything you begin knowing you will not see the result for a season. It is the karana of slow returns rather than immediate ones.

It appears eight times in a lunar month, occupying the same relative slot each time in the repeating cycle of seven movable karanas, and it always falls in a fixed half of the tithi it belongs to. The karana never runs free of the tithi; it is a finer cut of the same measurement.

The useful reading is about horizon rather than outcome. Some work pays back this week and some pays back next year, and putting the second kind on a day associated with patience is a small piece of self management. The soil metaphor is doing real work here: what you plant is your decision, and the waiting is part of the price.
