Today's tithi is Dwadashi, in the Shukla paksha, the waxing half of the lunar month. The Moon moves through Shravana nakshatra, pada 4. The vara is Budhavara, and the panchang's remaining limbs are Sukarma yoga and Bava karana.

Budhavara, the day of Mercury

Budhavara is the vara ruled by Budha, the graha associated with speech, study, accounts and every kind of exchange that travels as information.

Budha is the quickest of the visible grahas and never strays far from the Sun, and its day carries that flavour in the tradition: messages, negotiation, teaching and learning, numbers, contracts read carefully, and work that improves when it is checked twice. It is the classical slot for anything that begins as a conversation.

The four fixed karanas and the whole geometry of the panchang are, in a sense, Mercury's kind of subject, since they are arithmetic before they are anything else. If you want to learn how one of the five limbs actually works rather than what it is said to mean, this is a fitting day to sit down with it.

Traditional use also puts commerce here, alongside Shukravara. The distinction the tradition draws is between the terms of a deal, which belong to Budha, and the pleasure of the thing bought, which belongs to Shukra. Whether that distinction is useful to you is a matter of how your week is actually shaped.
